Legacy System Modernization for Supply Chain Food Distributor
Legacy System Modernization for Food Distributor
Overview: Infrastructure Modernization Case Study
Prime Time Produce, a leading produce distributor in the food supply chain, partnered with Stratus10 to drive supply chain digital transformation through legacy system modernization. The company needed to migrate data center workloads to the cloud while maintaining uninterrupted business operations and secure remote access to their Famous ERP system.
AWS Advanced Consulting Partner, Stratus10, delivered a comprehensive migration strategy leveraging AWS infrastructure and Amazon WorkSpaces applications to provide secure, scalable remote application access with SAML-based authentication and Duo MFA. The solution resulted in minimal operational disruption, improved scalability, enhanced security, and reliable remote access to business-critical applications.
About Prime Time Produce

Prime Time Produce operates in produce distribution and agricultural logistics, serving customers across the regional food supply chain. The company's Famous ERP system handles inventory management, order processing, and day-to-day supply chain coordination.
With a growing workforce requiring reliable access to critical business applications, Prime Time Produce recognized the need to modernize their IT infrastructure to support operational efficiency and business continuity.
Challenges
Prime Time Produce faced a significant challenge with their existing on-premises data center infrastructure. The company needed to migrate critical workloads to the cloud while ensuring zero disruption to their daily distribution operations.
Business continuity risk: Any downtime in their ERP system could directly impact order fulfillment, inventory tracking, and supply chain coordination resulting in potential revenue loss and customer dissatisfaction.
Scalability limitations: The existing infrastructure lacked the flexibility to support concurrent remote users efficiently. The company needed a solution that could scale dynamically based on demand while maintaining enterprise-grade security standards.
Authentication gaps: With multiple users accessing sensitive business data remotely, Prime Time Produce required multi-factor authentication (MFA) and centralized identity management integrated with their existing Active Directory environment.
Without legacy system modernization, the aging on-premises infrastructure would have led to increased maintenance costs, limited scalability, security vulnerabilities, and an inability to support the growing remote workforce, ultimately impacting business competitiveness in an increasingly digital supply chain.
Why AWS
Prime Time Produce selected AWS as their cloud platform because it provided the scalable infrastructure, reliability, and enterprise-grade services required for their migration.
Scalable cloud infrastructure that could grow with business demands and handle numerous concurrent users accessing the Famous ERP application without performance degradation.
Reliable migration capabilities with proven tools and methodologies to move workloads from on-premises data centers with minimal risk.
Minimal business disruption through services like Amazon WorkSpaces, which enabled secure remote application delivery without requiring changes to the end-user experience.
Strong security ecosystem including IAM, SAML federation, and integration with third-party MFA providers like Duo Security, ensuring enterprise-grade protection for sensitive business data.
AWS also aligned with Prime Time Produce's long-term system modernization and operational efficiency goals, providing a foundation for future cloud-native innovations and infrastructure optimization.

Stratus10's consultative approach and understanding of Prime Time Produce's unique business requirements before proposing a solution further solidified the partnership. Their ability to design a comprehensive architecture encompassing infrastructure migration, secure remote application delivery, and identity management demonstrated a holistic understanding of the customer's needs.
Solution: Legacy System Modernization
Stratus10's solution addressed two parallel needs: migrating on-premises workloads to AWS, and enabling secure, scalable remote delivery of the Famous ERP application.
Infrastructure Migration
Stratus10 executed a smooth migration of Prime Time Produce's on-premises workloads to AWS, leveraging a dedicated VPC in the US West (Oregon) region. The infrastructure was designed with high availability in mind, utilizing multiple Availability Zones and properly segmented public and private subnets to ensure security and resilience.
Secure Remote Application Delivery Using Amazon WorkSpaces
For the Famous ERP application, Stratus10 implemented Amazon WorkSpaces applications to deliver the application securely to all concurrent users:
WorkSpaces Fleet configured with auto-scaling policies to dynamically adjust capacity based on user demand, ensuring users always have access without over-provisioning resources.
Custom application image built with the Famous ERP client (famous60.exe) on Windows Server 2022, optimized for performance and reliability.
Application streaming in Application View mode, providing users with a focused, distraction-free experience when accessing Famous ERP.
Identity and Access Management
Stratus10 implemented a robust authentication architecture using SAML 2.0 federation between Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) and AWS IAM:
AD FS Server deployed on AWS (EC2 t3a.small) and domain-joined to Prime Time Produce's Active Directory, providing seamless integration with existing user credentials.
SAML-based authentication enabling users to access WorkSpaces using their existing Active Directory credentials without managing separate cloud identities.
Application Entitlements configured to control which authenticated users can access the Famous ERP application based on SAML attributes.
SSL/TLS encryption using Let's Encrypt certificates with automated renewal for the AD FS endpoint.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
To enhance security, Stratus10 integrated Duo Security MFA with the AD FS authentication flow:
Duo MFA prompts users for a second factor after Active Directory authentication, protecting against credential theft and unauthorized access.
Self-enrollment capability allowing users to set up Duo Mobile on their first login without IT intervention.
Flexible authentication methods including push notifications, one-time passcodes, and phone callbacks.
Primary AWS Services Used
Amazon WorkSpaces for secure remote delivery of Famous ERP application to all concurrent users
Amazon EC2 for AD FS server hosting (t3a.small, domain-joined)
AWS IAM for SAML federation, roles, and policies for secure access control
Amazon VPC for network isolation and security
Elastic IP for static addressing for AD FS server endpoint
