Executive Summary

Ricardo PLC, a global strategic engineering and environmental consultancy, sought to migrate their extensive onsite data archive to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). Stratus10 configured their S3 buckets to handle legacy data that should not be overwritten and set up appropriate logging. For lower priced storage options, Stratus10 used object lifecycle management to ensure that older items were moved to the appropriate storage tiers. Account security and set-up met the CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark and AWS Console via IAM requirements.

About Ricardo PLC

Website: https://ricardo.com

Ricardo PLC is a global strategic engineering and environmental consultancy that specializes in the transport, energy and scarce resources sectors. Their work extends across a range of market sectors – including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, rail, defense, motorsport, energy and environment – and they possess a client list that includes transport operators, manufacturers, energy companies, financial institutions and government agencies.

Challenge

Ricardo had an extensive archive of all their past projects stored in on-premise file servers, consisting of documents, spreadsheets, CAD files, audio and video files, and some raw data files depending on the project.

Each of the 20+ global sites was storing 10s to 100s of terabytes of data. Sites were backing up storage for each other, and in some cases sending data off-site via providers such as Iron Mountain.

Solution

Stratus10 assisted Ricardo with a plan to migrate onsite data from to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). S3 bucket management was properly configured to handle legacy archive data that should not be overwritten, and appropriate logging of access was configured.

To take advantage of lower priced storage options, Stratus10 set up object lifecycle management to ensure that older items were moved to the appropriate storage tiers.

Account security and set-up were implemented to meet requirements of the CIS AWS Foundations Benchmark and AWS Console via IAM Policies.

    Next Steps

Stratus10 will assist additional global Ricardo sites in migrating their data into Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3).

Additionally, Stratus10 is scheduled to set up Amazon Kendra, an intelligent search service powered by machine learning (ML). Kendra centralizes access to enterprise knowledge by using natural language and simple keywords to aggregate content from repositories, even when it’s scattered across multiple locations, letting users quickly and easily search all of their enterprise data.
