Migration to Amazon RDS for MySQL

SEACOMP case study - electronics manufacturing

About SEACOMP

SEACOMP helps launch electronics within consumer, medical, and industrial spaces through design engineering and contract manufacturing.

They specialize in transforming ideas into a physical product that can be distributed worldwide through their electronics manufacturing, electrical engineering, and design capabilities.

Founded in 1989, their services have evolved with their manufacturing capabilities completed under our MH MFG brand. They have two additional brands, Displaytech and HDP Power, that support component needs through embedded LCD displays and power supplies.

The Challenge

SEACOMP, an electrical engineering firm and electronics manufacturer with global operations, was required to use specific regions due to compliance requirements. They needed their applications to support multi-region availability with a secure infrastructure to protect their intellectual property.

Why Stratus10

Stratus10 was the perfect fit to deliver a comprehensive solution for SEACOMP that was repeatable and flexible enough to adjust to their client’s demands. Their expertise across the AWS suite of services resulted in the best solution for SEACOMP that leveraged services they didn’t even know were available. Stratus10’s knowledge of autoscaling techniques as well as application and database migration services helped SEACOMP achieve this environment.

The Solution

Using several AWS services, Stratus10 delivered a solution that began with modifying SEACOMP’s network architecture and building a scalable infrastructure and database configuration. The new infrastructure was set up using security and Well-Architected best practices.

SEACOMP’s computing layer was enhanced with autoscaling groups, allowing customer’s systems to efficiently react to unpredictable traffic changes. Traffic flow was improved by adding AWS Application Load Balancers, replacing custom reverse proxy host lookup methods.

Stratus10 migrated SEACOMP's databases from MySQL Server on a single EC2 instance to Amazon RDS for MySQL, which made it easier for SEACOMP to set up, operate, and scale their MySQL deployments. This provided them with a highly-available and scalable database solution. The initial size of the database was chosen based on the number of clients and the number of database requests.

The AWS Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is a collection of managed services that makes it simple to operate in the cloud. RDS allows SEACOMP to use either the AWS Management Console or a set of APIs to create, delete, and modify their database instances. RDS also provides storage, backup and recovery, high availability, and monitoring/metrics, which they didn’t have using just MySQL.

Results and Benefits

By implementing Stratus10’s solution, SEACOMP has seen improved performance, increased security, and has created a well-architected environment for their clients. Application components are now segregated, allowing for “least privilege” principles to be leveraged. Autoscaling will ensure system reliability while reducing unnecessary management overhead. Migrating from a single EC2 instance running MySQL to RDS for MySQL has provided additional reliability and high availability for their databases in addition to minimizing maintenance.
